The genus Kania Schltr. is defined and its relationship with Metrosideros Banks ex Gaertn. and Cloezia Brongniart et Gris (= Mooria Montr.) is clarified. Two new combinations are made: Kania urdanetensis (basionym Photinia urdanetensis Elmer, transferred from Cloezia) and K. microphylla (basionym Tristania microphylla Quisumbing et Merrill). The known range of Kania is extended to the Philippines and Cloezia is now considered to be restricted to New Caledonia. |

Interdependence has always been central to economics but assumes pressing importance for agricultural economists as they deal with industrialising agricultures. Continued unresolvable uncertainties, when properly recognised, also add to the challenge of relevant work in agricultural economics. The related roles of interdependence and uncertainty are illustrated through examples from the progress of agricultural technology and enhancement of food security. |

In “The Role of Agriculture in Economic Development,” written nearly a quarter of a century ago, Bruce Johnston and I discussed the principal means by which agriculture could assist in transforming a traditional low-income economy in a modern high-income one. In the intervening years the literature and much of the practice of development has been dominated by either emphasis on industrialization, independent of agricultural development, or on agriculture as a provider of basic human needs, independent of commercialization and industrialization. Perhaps the time is ripe to pick up the old threads of a dynamic interaction between agriculture and industry. Those threads lead to a very specific strategy for development of agriculture itself in which... |

This report provides summaries of the papers and discussions at the third Consortium on Trade Research held in Washington, D.C., June 23-24, 1981. The cochairmen of the consortium were T. Kelley White, Economic Research Service (ERS), George E. Rossmiller, Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS), and Vernon Sorenson, Michigan State University. The Consortium focused on world demand for agricultural imports and the policies and conditions in low-income, middle-income, and centrally planned countries that influence import demand. An overview paper by Dewain Rahe and Cheryl Christensen assessed future global prospects for agricultural trade. Peter Timmer's paper investigated conceptual and empirical problems in analyzing import demand. Three of the papers... |
